This year, I was finally able to take Facing history. Over the past couple years, I’ve been repeatedly told about this amazing, life changing, tear jerking class. Student after student that had taken the class recommended it to me. No matter who I asked, I couldn’t find one negative word spoken about the class. I had to see what all the hype was about. At first, it seemed like just a normal class, focused on the sociology of people in the world, both now and back when the Nazis were in power. We started off with a lot of group exercises, unifying the classroom a bit and beginning to open up the subject of anti-Semitism and just general rudeness in society. At first, I felt like I was just learning about the nature of people. Then, the picture started to get bigger and bigger.
We began to watch movies about the Nazi actions. At this point, I still believed that we were only being taught about how bad the Nazis were. As the course went on, we moved on to movie after movie, every single one showing the atrocities of the Nazis in one of the worst periods of time in world history. Facing History provides views as to why Germany became filled to the brim with anti-Semitism and bigotry. Facing History is not only about the atrocities of World War II, but also about the students themselves. Facing history and OURSELVES really provides some introspective into who we truly are.
